2010 BorderDuel Showcases Hot Performances
Hot weather and a field of hot competitors resulted in 13 new meet records at the third edition of the BordeDuel Track Classic. Three of the record performances also broke the stadium high school records as well. In the team competition, Oregon came out ahead on both sides as the Oregon girls made it three straight with a 77-49 victory and the Oregon boys squeeked out a 66-60 win. Most Outstanding Performer honors went to: The distance races provide much of the meet's exciting moments as records were set in five of the six events. In the 800m, the featured races at the end of the meet, there was fierce competition for the meet medals. In both races, multiple runners broke the previous meet records. In the girls race, Julia Fonk (SR, Franklin, OR; the State 1500m champ) lead from the start until Annie Moore (SR, Sehome, WA) took over with 250m to go. Moore opened a small gap that Fonk closed on the homestretch, but Moore stayed ahead to take the record in 2:12.92 to Fonk's 2:13.04. Coming in third with a great finishing run was Lauren Morgan (SO, South Medford, OR) in 2:14.79. All three runners dipped under the previous meet record time of 2:14. 87 by Caroline Austin (WF West, WA) set in 2008. Defending BorderDuel 800m champion, Tim Pettit (SR, Kentwood, WA) came out of the pack to make his move down the backstretch and take charge to the race. Pettit continued to pull away in the final straightaway to win convincingly in 1:53.44 and break his own meet record of 1:55.03 set in 2009. In a great battle second, Ryan Perry (JR, South Medford, OR) prevailed in a time of 1:54.78 over Austin Collins (JR, Colton, OR) in 1:55.35 and Zachary Boyd-Helm (JR, West Linn, OR) in 1:55.50. The three Oregonians posted the State's #2, #3, #4 fastest times of the year and Kit Kingstad (SR, Beaverton, OR), finishing in fourth place with a 1:56.45, claimed the #8 slot in the state rankings. Arthur Delaney (JR, Barlow, OR) the State's 100m and 200m champion in 10.42 and 21.28, moved up to test 400m in the BorderDuel. It was a decision that led to much pre-race speculation by local track fans. Delaney got out fast, making up the staggers on the field by the 150m mark and did not fade on the homestretch as he finished in 48.33. The mark missed the State's #1 time for this season by a mere 0.03 seconds and was a stadium record for high school boys bettering the 48.43 posted by Nate Anderson (Benson, OR) in 2004.
